Summary

Probable Iron Age or medieval defended enclosure at Whelpley Hill Camp - The visible and buried remains of a slight univallate hillfort located on a broad plateau in the Chiltern Hills. The hillfort is roughly circular in plan with the interior measuring 120m north west-south east by 100m south west-north east.

Description

Dimensions - Length 120m, Width 100m.
Plan Form - Oval.
Situated on a plateau surrounded by a rampart (01:002) & ditch (01:003). Gap in bank in SE is the only visible entrance (01:001). No trace of structures and no finds. In 1860 attempt made to bring whole area under plough (B2).
A roughly circular plateau camp covering about 4-1/2 acres consisting of a single rampart with a ditch that measures 62ft wide and 3ft deep. There is a slight gap in the rampart to the SE; possibly the original entrance. (B4).

A univallate IA defended settlement, situated on a plateau, under permanent pasture. It is oval in shape, measuring internally circa 120.0m NW-SE by circa 100.0m transversely. The rampart and ditch are visible around the whole circuit, though greatly reduced by ploughing and overlaid by a hedge line in the W arc. Where best-preserved in the E arc, the rampart is 0.7 high and spread to 16.0m across; the ditch is 0.4m deep and spread to 12.0m across. There is a gap in the bank in the SE, the only entrance visible, though it does not carry across the ditch. There is no trace of structures in the enclosed area, and no finds are known to the landowner. Published survey (25') revised (B10).
SP 996 039. Whelpley Hill. Listed in gazetteer as a univallate hillfort covering 1.8ha (B11).
Whelpley Hill. There is a fine oval camp here nearly obliterated (B3).
Whelpley Hill. Possibly a small plateau fort, but severely ploughed out. No known finds (B12).
