Description
A NUMBER OF C15-C18 TIMBER BUILDINGS RECORDED BY CHRISTOPHER GOWING (BCM), BCC COUNTY ARCHITECTS AND NMR STAFF DURING DEMOLITION, AUG-DEC 1964 (B1).
GROUND PLANS, ELEVATIONS, SECTIONS, NOTES, PHOTOS ETC MADE OF: NOS 11, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 SILVER STREET; NOS 17, 19, 31/33/35 ('OLD BEAMS'), 37, 39, 45, 47 & 'CROSS KEYS', MARKET SQUARE; PHOENIX, JONES & COCKS, BOURBON STREET (B3).
NGR TO CENTRE OF DEMOLITION AREA (B2).
(SP81891363. Site of stables located from authy.1 plan and OS 1250 1972.) Stables on the NE side of Friarage Road were probably built in the C17th. The walls are of brick and timber and the roof is tiled. Condition - Good (B4).
The stables and inn are not depicted on the OS 1250 1972 (b7). Demolished (B5).
The White Horse Inn is two storeyed, and was built in the C16th on a rectangular plan, but has been enlarged. The front is covered in modern plaster, and the walls at the rear have been almost entirely refaced. The roof is tiled. The roof is of double queen-post construction and has been heightened. Condition - Good (B4).
