Description

POSSIBLE ENCLOSURES &/OR HOUSE PLATFORMS VISIBLE ON AP (WITHIN AREA PLOTTED ON CAS 6IN RECORD MAP)(B2). HOWEVER FIELD VISIT FEB 1977 FOUND THE WHOLE AREA UNDER PLOUGH & NOTHING VISIBLE ON THE GROUND. NGR TO FARM (B3).

An area of shrunken settlement of medieval date is/are visible on historic aerial photographs as earthworks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located at Stockholt Farm, Akeley, and centred at SP 70175 38370. Earthworks of possible boundaries and ditches are visible on 1940s aerial photographs but land use changed to arable between 1961 and 1968 and the area has been ploughed level. The Whittlewood Project fieldwalked the fields around the farm and recorded medieval pottery, associated with the site of a manor here at the time. Test pitting within the parish was only undertaken within the village. (6-14)
