Description
IN CHARTER AD 966 EDGAR GRANTS AELGIFU LAND AT LINSLADE; 'YTTINGA FORDA' IS MENTIONED AS 1 OF THE BOUNDARIES OF THE LAND GRANTED (BI1). 'YTTINGA FORD' MARKED AT NGR SP 9139 2341 (BI2). Yttingaford was the point near Leighton where the high road from Aylesbury to Bedford crossed the Ouzel. It is named in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle as the place where Edward the Elder made peace with the Danes in about 903. Two branches of the Ouzel make an island here which may be identified as the meeting place between Edward and the Danes (B6).
