Description

'Lock' (later edition OS maps 'Lock (Disused)') marked at NGR (B3).
1 of 2 locks on Buckingham Branch. Had a rise of about 7feet & the pound above got its water from the artificially raised river (B5).
Upper Lock is a normal narrow lock about 70 feet X 7 feet 6 inches. Double gates both ends. Rise about 6 feet. Lower gates standing, ruinous. Dated 1878, normal Grand Junction type cast iron dated hinge & post. Paddle in R gate (--- upstream). Upper gates collapsed over sill. Dated 1891. Chamber brick; cracked at upper end & foundations dropping away. No sign of ground paddles. [Lock Keeper's] cottage still inhabited. Brick, early C19 (B4).
