Description

REFERENCE TO FOUNDATIONS AND PAVING HAVING BEEN PLOUGHED UP. PAVING IN FORM OF DICE WORK. SITE INTERPRETED AS CHAPEL (B1).
SITE LOCATED IN STONEY ROCKS FIELD TO SOUTH OF BRAINFORD WOOD ON SLIGHT PLATEAU (B7).
1840 TITHE MAP REFERS TO FIELD STONEY ROCKS POSSIBLY SIGNIFICANT (B5).

Stone foundations and a coin 'about the size of a half-crown' (possibly a sestertius) have been noted by Chauncy in Chappel Field, SU 960955. He also mentions 'paving work in manner of dice work' which would surely refer to a tessellated or mosaic floor. Branigan's reference however, places Chappel Field in the middle of the present Brentford Wood, but what might possibly be foundations are visible on A/Ps in the field to the East, at SU 96209517. (B4 and B10).

No trace of stone foundations at Branigan's site in Brentford Wood or at either AP site, and no finds have been made by the farmer or by members of the Chess Valley Arch Soc who have attempted to locate the site. The only Chapel Field known in the parish is in Coleshill Village at SU 949951 (B11).

NRHE Insert 1999 (B12).
