Description

PARTS OF MOAT ON W & N SIDES OF STOKE HOUSE (B2).
PRESENT STOKE HOUSE HAS PART OF A MOAT & THERE CAN BE LITTLE DOUBT THAT IT OCCUPIES THE SITE OF THE OLD MANOR-HOUSE OF NEWBURY (B3).

An L shaped pond and associated water channels of medieval/post medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located on the north west side of Stoke House, Stoke Mandeville, and centred at SP 83694 09788. An L shaped pond measuring approximately 44x41m at its largest, and 13-18m across, is clear on lidar visualisation, with two channels, possible tail races, on the northern, downstream side, which rejoin the stream approximately 60m further north. Upstream a water channel is visible from higher ground to the south. Aerial photographs show is it surrounded by mature trees. A stream for water supply and drainage for a mill pond or moat can be seen from the south on historic mapping and is visible on modern aerial photographs. Ordnance Survey Epoch 1-3 mapping shows a building across the stream on the corner of the L shaped pond but this is gone by 1994. (4-9)
