Description

Plan Form - LINEAR
A DITCH CUT INTO THE INFILLED HILLFORT DITCH, TO A DEPTH OF NEARLY 2M. CONTAINED A SCEATA (DATED AD 710-20), A FEW SHERDS OF IPSWICH WARE, A BONE COMB & ANIMAL BONES (B3).
Part of an immature pig skull from the lower fill of the ditch was radiocarbon dated to AD 650-780 (B10).

SP81651359. A ditch, dated by a sceat of AD 710-20, and by Ipswich Ware to the Middle Saxon Period, was cut on the same alignment as the ditch of the earlier Iron Age hillfort, (SP81SW55). There was no Saxon material of a later date. The ditch was nearly 2.0m deep. It may have been a boundary ditch for the minster church associated with St Osyth, or possibly even a boundary ditch associated with the C6th settlement founded by the eponymous Egil (B11 and B4).
