Description

(SP 956178). The chapel which formerly stood in Ivinghoe Aston was dedicated to St James and founded by Ralph Halywell, but at what period is not known. Its earliest notice appears to be in 1337, and from the Commissioners Return of 1547 it is inferred that the chapel was founded chiefly as a chapel-of-ease for the inhabitants of the hamlet. It existed as late as 1553, but its date of demolition is not known, the spot on which it stood, 'Chapel Hill' now part of allotment gardens, is still known. Adjoining 'Chapel Hill' was `Chapel Wick' formerly containing an old house, probably the manse, and a further enclosure separated from 'Chapel Wick' by the carriage
road, called 'Chantry Close', was doubtless part of the endowment. Large wrought stones and human bones have been dug up by the tenant of 'Chapel Hill' evidently connected with the former chapel. (Nothing visible on RAF APs at SP 956178). REMAINED CONSECRATED GROUND TILL 1820. 2 OLD PEOPLE RECALL GRAVES HERE (B2, 1856).
NGR TO CHAPEL HILL FIELD (B5).
