2 HOUSE PLATFORMS VISIBLE ON AERIAL PHOTOGRAPH (B1). SITE NOW BUILT ON. NO TRACE REMAINS (B2).

An area of shrunken settlement of medieval date is visible on historic aerial photographs as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located approximately 100m west of the Manor House, Akeley and centred at SP 71009 37596. Linear earthworks, perpendicular to Leckhampstead Road, are visible on 1946 aerial photograph. Earthworks parallel to the road would not show due to light conditions on the aerial photograph; shadows are west-east. These earthworks are all south of an area of ridge and furrow earthworks. By 1970 a row of detached houses has been built on this land and no trace is visible. As part of the Whittlewood Project test pitting was undertaken in the village. Test pit 1, within this area, initially produced no evidence of early medieval occupation but later building work recovered unabraded sherds of Saxo-Norman pottery indicating an area of settlement close to the Manor House.
