Description

Plan Form - RECTANGULAR
RECTANGULAR OR SUB-RECTANGULAR ENCLOSURE, APPARENTLY WITH ENTRANCE ON E SIDE, VISIBLE ON A/P'S (B1).
NOTHING VISIBLE ON GROUND. FIELD UNDER PASTURE; QUITE GOOD RIDGE AND FURROW VISIBLE (B2).

A post medieval subrectangular ditched enclosure is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a field about 685 metres NW of Lower Farm and centred at SP 81382 24381, a subrectangular ditch up to 4 metres wide encloses an internal area about 29.5 metres WSW-ENE and 22 metres NNW-SSE. It is located within a block of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks. Its fiunction is uncertain, but may have served as a stock enclosures or a stack stand to keep winter fodder dry. On aerial photographs taken in 2022 and recent remote sensing data, the earthworks remain barely visible, having been much plough levelled ( 3-5 ).
