Description

Plan Form - RECTANGULAR
1810 MAP SHOWS YARDLEY FARM SURROUNDED BY RECTANGULAR MOAT (B1).
An "interesting fragment" of Erlai House still remains a short distance from the 18th century Yardley Farm House (B3).
(SP 93341632) Yardley Farm marks the site of Erlai, land which once formed a sub-manor in this parish, and gave its name to an ancient hundred, later to become part of Cottesloe Hundred. Erlai House a large moated mansion, formerly stood here, but was already in a ruined condition in the 18th century (B4).
SW SIDE OF MOAT STILL EXTANT BUT HAS BEEN SOMEWHAT LANDSCAPED ON NE SIDE (SURVEY & PHOTOS) (B7).

No trace of the pre-18th century house or moat survive at Yardley Farm. The farmer did not know of the site but said that the farm house dated from 1770. Not outstanding. (B8)
Lipscombe (b2) identified `Yardley' with `Erlai' and noted a field called Erlai Meadow. Yardley Farm is shown on the 1810 estate map surrounded by a rectangular moat (B9) at SP 9335 1632, now infilled (B10).
