EARTHWORKS FOUND IN PARK WOOD FOUND BY D BARKER, 1976. SLIGHT TERRACE BUILT INTO HILLSIDE WITH BUILT UP PLATFORM WITH SUNKEN CENTRE, PROBABLY COLLAPSED FLINT BUILDING. ASSOCIATED STRUCTURES, INTERPRETED AS OUTHOUSE, WELL & DOVECOT? FINDS SUGGEST C13-C14. FARMSTEAD OR KEEPERS LODGE? (B1-6). SURVEY (B3).
The focus of the site is a rectangular mound of flints measuring 17m long by 11m wide. It has a central depression with the flints mounded round the outer edge, corresponding with the outline of a collapsed building. The smaller mound to the south, once interpreted as a dovecote, is now thought to be a flint waste dump. Surrounding features may be unconnected. There is a platform of some kind, quarries, sawpits and charcoal platforms (B10).
Trench excavated through mound in the NE corner. 3 sherds of medieval pottery, and 11 fragments of handmade rooftile were recovered (B11).
Iron slag fragments reported by John Morris in 2007 (B12).
(Sited at SU 826981 from plan) Earthworks recently surveyed in Park Wood consisting of a well-defined rectangular building, two smaller mounds and other linear features. There
is a dense scatter of medieval tile and 13th/14th century pottery. Site lightly planted with beeches. (B5)
SU 8265 9815. Medieval homestead site with 13th/14th century pottery etc. and a possible park in the vicinity. Full report (B4). Additional reference (B13)
NRHE update 2011 (B14).
