RECTANGULAR DITCH COMPLEX RUNNING N-S,DEPTH,WIDTHETC NOT KNOWN.VISIBLE ON A/P BY MRS J STRONG,BETWE EN WOAD HILL & DENHAM FARM (BI1)

Three contiguous rectilinear ditched enclosures of possible medieval date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in fields W of Woad Hill and about 345 metres NE of Denham Farm and centred at SP 475541 221238, the earthworks comprise a trapezoidal ditched enclosure whose ditch varies in width from 6 to 15 metres, within which is a small block of ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks. The N side is about 108 metres long and up to 12 metres wide, aligned W-E: the W side is about 113 metres long and up to 8.5 metres wide, aligned NNW-SSE: the S side is about 82 metres long and up to 8.5 metres wide, aligned W-E: and the E side is about 121 metres long and up to 15 metres wide, aligned NNE-SSW. The S side forms the N side of the second contiguous trapezoidal ditched enclosure, the ditch varying between 4 and 15 metres wide. The N side is about 104 metres long and up to 9 metres wide, aligned W-E: the W side is about 80 metres long and up to 5.5 metres wide, aligned SW-NE: the S side is fragmentary but about 116 metres long and up to 10 metres wide, aligned W-E: and the E side is about 91 metres long and up to 15 metres wide, aligned NNE-SSW. The E side partly forms the W side of the third enclosure. It is subrectangular and encloses an internal area about 106 x 21 metres at its widest point. Some 500 metres to the S is the medieval deserted settlement of Denham and it is notable that there is a similar trapezoidal ditched enclosure or moat about 1000 metres to the NE.On aerial photographs taken in 2021 and recent remote sensing data, the earthworks remain extant (2-4).
