Description

Plan Form - CIRCULAR
A/C OF CHETWODE RHYNE TOLL, GRANTED TO CHETWODES FOR KILLING A FIERCE BOAR. 1810: LARGE DITCHED MOUND, 'BOAR'S POND', LEVELLED. REMAINS OF ENORMOUS BOAR FOUND. DITCH 10 X 6 PACES, 3-4FT DEEP. TOLL LAPSED 1884 (B2-4).
1813 MAP: 'WILD BOAR POND' WITH CENTRAL ISLAND. NO TRACE EXCEPT POSS SOILMARK. AIRFIELD SITE (B5).

'Boars Pond', a moated mound situated a few hundred yards away from the right hand side of the road from Chetwode Manor House to the Finmere and Bicester turnpike, close to the boundary of Tingewick Wood. Although it was levelled in 1810 the field is still known as 'Boars Head Field' (B2).
Local enquiries led to Mr G Chambers of Pound Lane, Preston Bissett who recalled farming here 80 years ago. He said the last wild boar was killed in Berry Field SP 65453105 but knew of no moat having been there. Almost certainly the same field as referred to above, it is divided by a stream, and although some adjacent disturbance is evident in the N part, nothing identifiable as the remains of a moat could be seen (B7).
