9080 SU 98 Area centred SU 909802 TAPLOW Incomplete rectangular enclosure with adjacent linear feature. Small oval enclosure immediately to W. ST JOSEPH 57 VP 8-10 (B5).
A possible incomplete rectangular enclosure, of unknown date, with a boundary ditch parallel to its east side, is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. The enclosure measures 75m across and the boundary ditch is 32m long. They are centred at SU 9094 8020 and SU 9100 8018. (Morph No. TG.537.1.1-2)
The oval enclosure described by authority 1 could not be identified on the aerial photographs referred to during the survey of this area.
This description is based on data from the RCHME MORPH2 database (B6).
Aerial photographs taken in June 2010 reveal the entire enclosure as a large rectangular enclosure defined by a broad ditch with straight sides and slightly rounded corners. It has an entrance in the eastern end of the southern side and traces of internal sub-dividing ditches which are considerably narrower than the enclosing ditch. The ditch which runs parallel to the eastern side can be seen extending into the field to the south. There appears to be two fainter parallel ditches running on the same course and traceable to the north of the enclosure which could be the remains of a trackway associated with the enclosure, representing a different phase to the linear ditch. There are further traces of ditches and other possible enclosures visible to the east of the enclosure (B7).
NRHE insert 1999, update 2015 (B8).
