Description

GROUP OF TRACKWAYS & HOUSE PLATFORMS HEMMED IN BY RIDGE & FURROW ON E & N, PHOTOGRAPHED FROM THE AIR (B1).

Medieval platforms, earthwork banks, boundary ditches, trackways and hollow ways of a deserted settlement is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in fields at North End and centred at SP 70100 27628, the earthworks extend over an area about 285 metres NNW-SSE and 215 metres WNW-ESE. The earthworks comprise a series of subrectangular and irregular shaped platforms and banks, some of which are bounded by linear ditches that may be trackways surrounded by blocks of ridge and furrow cultivation in all directions. A linear ditch up to 4 metres wide extends through the site for 290 metres from the SW curving to the ESE amongst abutting blocks of ridge and furrow cultivation that appears to be a hollow way or trackway. A curving double ditch about 5 metres apart extends through the site about 150 metres from the S to NNW, appearing to cut through some of the platforms and bisect other ditches, suggesting a post-medieval or possibly 20th century date (2-4).
