Description

NEOLITHIC FLINTS, RB POTTERY & TILE (FLUE & ROOF) FROM SITES 'A', 'B', 'C', 'D' & 'E', LOCATED MAINLY WITHIN 1 FIELD C.600M SE OF MANOR FARM. AREA CENTRED AT NGR (B1).
Dave Shelley reports finds of Romano-British pottery and Romano-British and Anglo-Saxon metalwork to Mike Farley and Shelagh Lewis (B2-3).
Mr Shelley believes site may be a possible Romano-British temple. Summary map of his finds from the area supplied to Shelagh Lewis indicates finds of possible votive objects including a bronze bust of ?Cupid, another bronze head, a silver plaque and 2 votive axes (B2).
No further information supplied of these finds. See CAS 0177 for Shelagh Lewis' photographs of Dave Shelley's finds from area which probably include some of these objects (B4).

Linear features, a plough headland and a square ditch of uncertain date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as levelled earthworks and cropmarks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located at Manor Farm, Bourton, Buckingham, and centred at SP 71621 33205. The features recorded here are within an area where finds of Romano-British pottery and metalwork, related to a possible temple site, have been recorded. The aerial photographs available to the project showed a medieval plough headland within an area of ridge and furrow, a linear feature to the north of a probable former boundary, or part of a ditchalong a former roar/trackway recorded as part of MBC6040, and a moat like subrectangular ditch, 32m across. The latter is in the corner of field of ridge and furrow earthworks and the field boundary goes around the outside of this ditch. The Ordnance Surveyors’ Drawing of Wilmslow (1813) shows no structures or boundaries in this area and no field names are recorded in this area on the HER. The south eastern corner of the field contains probable extractive pits on other aerial photographs (see MBC45241). No evidence of any of the features already recorded in the record were visible on any aerial photographs available to the project. (5-7)
