Summary

Lower Palaeolithic implements including at least 19 hand axes, 4 retouched flakes and 22 flakes and 3 Levallois flakes were found from the GWR pit at Iver. The Great Western Pit lies between the railway and the canal in an area of Lynch Hill Gravel with overlying Brickearth geology. The pit is one of the oldest Iver pits and was operating in the 1890's.

Description

MOST ARTEFACTS FROM THIS PIT COLLECTED IN 1890'S BY TREACHER & ALLEN BROWN, THOUGH LACAILLE COLLECTED A FEW C.1930'S (B1-5,B7-10).
GWR PIT LOCATED FROM MAP IN B2 AS THAT SHOWN AT NGR (B6).
NOTE THAT ARCHIVE FORMS DO NOT RELATE DIRECTLY TO SUB-NUMBERS OF SMR SHEETS, BUT SHOULD ALL REFER TO 00:000.


(TQ 031 799) (2) Palaeolithic implements have been found at the GWR Pit, Iver, and comprise at least 19 hand axes (probably more material) 4 retouched and 22 unretouched flakes and 3 Levallois flakes. Distribution mostly at the BM but some in the BM (Nat Hist) and Oxford University Museum (B13).
GWR Pit TQ 032800. Most of the palaeoliths in the early collection just marked 'Iver' probably came from this pit. Treacher collected here around 1890. (See TQ 08 SW 19) (B5).
(GWR Pit centred TQ 031 799) Palaeoloithic finds from the GWR Pit held by the BM in the Lacaille collection comprise; 4 hand axes, 13 flakes, 4 Clactonian flakes (one from 8ft layer). (No Acc No available). Pa finds in the British Museum from the Sturge collection comprise 5 hand axes (No Acc No available). Pa finds in Oxford University Museum from the Treacher collection comprise 27 hand axes and 4 flakes (No Acc Nos available) (B14).
The gravel pit is disused and partially refilled. No further finds made (B15).
