Description
Dimensions - Width 0027 Length 0050 m
Plan Form - RECTANGULAR
HITHERTO UNRECORDED MOAT, MUCH EFFACED. DITCH CLEARLY DEFINED & ISLAND IS ABOVE LEVEL OF SURROUNDING PASTURE (B1-2).
OS 1:2500 MAP SHOWS 2 ARMS OF POSSIBLE MOAT OR ENCLOSURE, AT NGR (B3).
RECTANGULAR ENCLOSURE OVER RIDGE & FURROW SHOWS AS CROPMARK ON A/P BUT ONLY FAINTLY VISIBLE ON GROUND (B4).
The earthwork enclosure detected from aerial photographs and Lidar data is certainly post-Roman in date on stratigraphic grounds, as it was recorded directly overlying the Roman features in trenches 8, 10 and 11, but it is otherwise of uncertain date (B7).
A probably post-medieval D-shaped ditched and banked platform is visible on historic aerial photograph and remote sensing data as earthwork and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located on a field adjacent the River Thame about 640 metres SE of Weedon Hill Farm and centred at SP 82104 16230, a D-shaped platform is bound by a ditch up to 3.5 metres wide containing an internal area about 81 metres W-E and 60 metres NNW-SSE. The internal area is bound around its perimeter by an earthwork bank up to 3 metres wide. There appears to be a 3 metres wide break in both boundary bank and ditch on the SE corner. The ditch of the WSW facing side is linear and 70 metres long: the SSE facing side is curving and about 68 metres long: the ENE facing side is curving and about 70 metres long and the NNW facing side is linear and 68 metres long. Recent remote sensing data indicates that the soil of the internal area appears to have been much disturbed. Aerial photographs taken in 2003 show livestock feeding stations placed upon the platform, with heavy trampling exposing a large area of bare earth. In 2006 a herd of livestock are shown stood upon the platform. This illustrates the platform to be higher and drier than the surrounding pasture and this might indicate its possible origin and function as a stock enclosure, rather than a moat. On aerial photographs taken in 2023 and recent remote sensing data, the earthworks remain visible (8-13).
