Description

Dimensions - Length 140m.
'MOAT' AT NGR (B1).
NOTED ON AP (B2).

An irregularly shaped medieval moat is visible on historic aerial photographs as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in a field immediately east of Newton Purcell village and centred at SP 62641 30719, the moat is an irregularly shaped ditch up to 15.5 metres wide, with a subdivision creating two subrectangular enclosures. Within the southern enclosure is a rectangular ditch about 18x10 metres that may be a fishpond. On aerial photographs taken in 1947, the north-most end of the moat ditch appears to hold water, with significant vegetation around it. Still extant earthworks in 1961, all the moat features appear to have been infilled and levelled on aerial photographs taken in 1973. By 1993, the central section of the moat has been covered by three large agricultural buildings, which by 2015 have been extended to cover the north end of the moat (3-8).
