Summary

Two Romano British cremations in urns were found by a gardener whilst digging at the Gate House of Ascott Lodge in 1932 - May indicate Roman cremation cemetery.

Description

2 RB CINERARY URNS FOUND WHILE DIGGING GARDEN AT GATE HOUSE. The findspot was indicated on the ground by Brand at SP 8834 2239. NO FURTHER FINDS MADE. Surveyed at 1:2500. (B1). 1 URN CONTAINED BURNT BONES. WERE FOUND 6INS APART (B2). HOUSE WAS THEN (DEC 1932) CALLED 'HOLLYBANK'. URNS FOUND AT C2.5FT DEEP. BONES REBURIED IN A TIN (B3). FINDSPOT INDICATED BY FINDER, AT NGR (B1).



Two Romano-British cinerary urns containing bones were found by Brand whilst digging the garden of the Gate House in 1932. They were identified by Bagshaw of Dunstable, and sent to the British Museum (B3).
