Description

Grade II. Pair of houses, formerly 2 shops and dwellings. Early C19 with possible older origins and C20 alterations. Red brick in Flemish bond to front, with paler headers, slate roof and brick ridge and internal stacks. Double-depth plan. 3-storey, 2-window range. 6-panel, part-glazed door to far left (No.5) with thin pilasters to wood surround and C20 door to far right (No.4) with similar surround, bay windows to left and right of centre, formerly shop windows, all under continuous fascia with moulded cornice hood. Both bay windows are wide and shallow, that to right canted with glazing bars dividing window into 24 panes to front in 4 rows of 6, and 4 to sides. 12-pane sash windows to 1st floor, 9-pane sashes to 2nd floor, all with flat-arched heads. Projecting eaves. Back wall has thin timber-framing in rectangular panels, diagonal braces to posts and painted brick infill in stretcher bond. INTERIOR: No.4 has chamfered spine beams. Fireplace to ground-floor front room with reeded wood surround, staircase between front and back rooms. Fireplace to 1st-floor back bedroom with late Georgian cast-iron grate. Roof of common rafter construction. Built directly onto the former chapel next door, No.3 [CASS 0224702000], with no other side wall. Formerly a cobbler's shop (B1).
