Description

Plan Form - CURVILINEAR
LINEAR BANK & ?DOUBLE DITCH VISIBLE ON AP. ON BOTH SIDES OF A40 (B1).
IRREGULAR ?DITCH & BANK VISIBLE S OF A40 (BETWEEN MIDDLE PAIR OF NGR'S). A LARGE PIT LIES PARTLY ON ITS COURSE. BANK ON E SIDE OF DITCH, BUT PROFILE IRREGULAR ?DUE TO INFILLING. NOTHING VISIBLE N OF A40, BUT AREA LEVELLED (B2).

A ditch (SU 782952) defending attack from NE. Possibly associated with hugh sarsen stone. (B3).

Evidence of ditch on Aps (B4)

A depression, c 0.4m maximum depth, with intermittent bank to the E, c 0.5m maximum height extending through pasture fields from SU 7818 9521 to end at the modern road at SU 7830 9542, through a line of darker grass in the recreation ground to the N of the road indicates that the depression continued NE for about 60.0m (as shown on AP). Considerable ground disturbance to sculpture a miniature golf course has mutilated the feature, and a pond, formerly at SU 7830 9542, has been filled in.

Though mutilated, the iregularity of the bank-depression, and the topographic position does not suggest a rampart and ditch configuration of a defensive earthwork. It is more likely to be a sunken lane which may have been utilised as a lead and spillway to and from the pond. (B5).
