Monument record 0223505000 - TRAM HILL, BRILL

Summary

Post-Medieval pottery kilns, part of the Brill pottery industry, identified during construction work at Tramhill, Brill in 1975. Two burnt hollows containing pottery were identified and were thought to be the stoke holes of two kilns. Little was found on the kiln structures due to later activity, but they were thought to be brick built. Both were thought to be in production during the 17th century. producing a limited range of domestic wares including bowls, chamber pots, tygs and jugs, in a fine, sandy fabric. A later kiln was also identified during these excavations , it was a circular, brick built structure with an internal diameter of 2 metres. There were two opposed kilns and the kiln floor was also constructed of brick. The kiln has been interpreted as a small bottle-kiln which was situated at the end of a pot shed. The kiln produced bowls, dishes and jugs and was in production during the 19th century. Production ceased in the early 1860s. The kiln was known to have been operated by the Hubbocks family and was still extant in about 1908.
