- CAUSEWAYED ENCLOSURE (Neolithic - 4000 BC? to 2351 BC?)
Description
Plan Form - CURVED
IN W PART OF SITE A PAIR OF PARALLEL INTERRUPTED DITCHES WITH A 3RD SIMILAR TO W: LIKELY TO BE A NEOLITHIC CAUSEWAYED ENCLOSURE. ON GROUND MUCH WORKED FLINT (01:001) HERE, WHICH IS ON HIGHER GROUND THAN REST OF FIELD. 1:2500 AP PLOT (B2-3).
TRENCHING DID NOT FIND S SIDE OF ENCLOSURE, THOUGH NEOLITHIC FLINTS FOUND (B4).
Stretches of two or three plough-levelled parallel causewayed ditches, probably forming part of an enclosure, discovered during aerial reconnaissance by RCHME in July 1975. Fieldwalking on the site recovered only later Neolithic and Bronze Age flints (B7).
Cropmarks of two parallel interrupted ditches were seen in an arable field to the south-east of Dorney Reach and 90m to the east of the River Thames. The ditches are between 8m and 16m apart and run for 280m in a generally north-west to south-east direction. These features have previously been interpreted as Neolithic in date due to morphological similarities with causewayed enclosures. Fieldwalking in the area has produced Late Neolithic and Bronze Age worked flint. The ditches may form part of a causewayed enclosure, however, there is no indication as to the size of the original complete enclosure. It is possible that it was never enclosed completely by ditches but may have been defined by a curve of interrupted ditches cutting off a portion of land to the east of the River Thames, the river itself may have formed the western side of the enclosure. These features were plotted at 1:2500 scale, as part of a photogrammetric survey (B8).
