Monument record 0211800000 - STONE'S WOOD

Summary

Possible medieval fishponds seen in field visit in Stone's Wood - fishpond complex in Stone's Wood, Langley Park. Field investigations in 1974 located a series of connected ditches, partly waterfilled and apparently re-cut indicating that an orginal ditch ran around the perimeter of the wood, with a further rectangular ditch within. Amorphous wet depressions on the assumed line emphasise this original pattern.

Description

Plan Form - LINEAR
SERIES OF CONNECTED DITCHES, PARTLY WATERFILLED - POSSIBLE FISHPOND COMPLEX . IN DENSE DECIDUOUS WOOD (B1).

(Centred SU 99958190) Moated feature shown (B2).

The possible remains of a fishpond complex within the close deciduous Stone's Wood.
There best preserved in the NW & SW sections, a series of connected ditches, partly waterfilled and apparently re-cut suggest an orginal ditch ran around the perimeter of the wood, with a further rectangular ditch within. Amorphous wet depressions on the assumed line emphasise this original pattern.
Small amounts of cress found in the ditches indicate an adaptation or even an original usage of these stream-fed channels. Published survey (50") revised (B3).
