Description

Plan Form - CIRCULAR
2 WELLS, BOTH CUT INTO CLAY, FOUND IN BUILDING BEHIND FORMER FRAINES PREMISES. WELL A (SP8200013631), STONE LINED, NOT EXCAVATED. WELL B (SP8199613628),BRICK LINED, PARTLY DUG OUT (TO 3.6M) BY BUILDERS. MUCH VICTORIAN DEBRIS & A BLACK JUG, C19 BUCKLAND WARE. BRICK LINING AT 3.6M. WELL AT LEAST 4.6M DEEP (B1).
Well uncovered during demolition of rear sections of Old County Offices. The well was 1.92m wide and at least 6.9m deep. 1927 plan of the site before the construction of OCO indicates a pump located in the Judges lodgings , it is in the approximate location of the well (B2).
Two formerly separate buildings. Connected together and exrtended to accommodate further council uses. Both rendered and painted white with grey welsh slate slate. No. 5 is single bay wide with ground, first, and second floor accommodation. Central doorway with timber doorcase with roundels and pilasters beneath a fascia which spans both No. 5and 7. door is between two 2/2 sash windows. Above the door are single 8/8 sash windows.(B2)
No.7 is a slightly taller buildingwith an older section on the left, two windows on each floor and continuation of the shop fascia and window pilasters.Latrer extension on the right which has a single window on each floor, and a bay window on the southern elevation. The doorway into No.7 is a later insertion into what remains of a probably 19th century shop window which spanned the two buildings. It seems likely that the current doorway has been inserted into an earlie window and the narrow central division, defined by two timber columns, represents the original doorway. The rear of both buildings has been changed and much obscured by the late 20th century annex. The rear of both feature 2/2 sash windows. The Annex was a three storey modern building with the third floor fully within the slate covered mansard roof (B2).
