Description

Dimensions - Length 45m, Width 30m.
Plan Form - Rectangular.
To west of homestead moat, a small moated rectangular enclosure. NE & SE arms waterfilled & separated by remains of original entrance. NW & SW arms marshy depressions. Water fed from stream at N corner. Small retaining bank against NE arm of moat. Feature may be unusual form of fishponds (B6).

A subrectangular moat or fishpond of medieval/post medieval date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located approximately 900m north west of Aston Mullins House, Dinton-with-Ford and Upton, and centred at SP 76113 08754. This subrectangular moat like feature is approximately 170m west of the larger sub circular moat and shrunken settlement at Aston Mullins and close to the Cuttle Brook, which would likely have been the water supply for the moats/fishpond. There appears to be raised ground at the centre of the moat which could mean a building once stood there but there are no features clear enough to map. The external dimensions of the moat are approximately 47x31m and the ditch is approximately 2-11m wide. The internal platform measures approximately 12x12m. The ditches are very clearly visible on lidar visualisations and the modern land use appears to be pasture so the area not being degraded by ploughing. It is conjectured that this may be an unusual form of fishpond rather than a moat. (7-11)
