Description

SITE, WITHIN A WEDGE-SHAPED FIELD, LIES IN A SMALL VALLEY. APPARENT HOLLOW WAYS RUN AT RIGHT ANGLES TO THE VALLEY AT ITS NE END, GIVING THE IMPRESSION OF POSSIBLE HOUSE PLATFORMS, THOUGH VALLEY HAS PROBABL Y BEEN DRAINED. HIGHER UP VALLEY AT W IS ANOTHER PROBABLE PLATFORM. DISCOVERED BY MRS P HOLT(BI1)

Probable medieval village shrinkage is visible on historic aerial photograph and remote sensing data as earthwork and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a small close adjacent Longmoor Farm and centred at SP 84693 20569, the features extend about 180 metres W-E and 140 metres N-S, comprising a system of interconnected ditches or trackways form a series of contiguous rectilinear enclosures, as well as variously sized earthwork platforms. On aerial photographs taken in 2022 and recent remote sensing data, many of the features remain extant, though there seems to have been some levelling in the southern margins (2-3).
