Description

MAP OF 1788 MARKS 'HULCOTT MILL' APPROX AT NGR (B1).
POSSE COMITATUS RECORDS 1 WATERMILL & 1 WINDMILL, HELD BY JOHN MUNGER, AT HULCOTT (B2).
A MILL IS FIRST MENTIONED AT HULCOTT IN 1322. THE FOUNTAINS IN THE REIGN OF QUEEN ELIZABETH HELD A WATER-MILL, WHICH IS AGAIN MENTIONED WHILE THE NEALES HELD THE MANOR [TEMP. GEORGE I]. ALSO MENTIONED IN 1652 (B4).
A SMALL BRICK BARN ON SUGGESTED SITE, & MAY WELL HAVE BEEN BUILT ON THE FOUNDATIONS OF THE MILL BUILDING. A SUBSTANTIAL DOUBLE BANK RUNS N EACH SIDE OF THE FIELD BOUNDARY FROM SP85731685 TO THE MILL SITE, WHICH PRESUMABLY REPRESENTS THE MILL LEAT: & FROM THE MILL SITE A SUBSTANTIAL DITCH RUNS N TO JOIN THE THAME IN C.250M (B5).
10 PIECES OF LIMESTONE BLOCKS NOTED IN GRASS N OF MILL SITE. IS LEAT CONNEC TED TO CAS 02274? (B6).
Mills at Hulcott and Rowsham mentioned in Eyre Rolls of 1286, in connection with a dispute over common rights of fishing from Rowsham Mill up to Hulcott Mill. William le Graunt seems to have been the owner of both mills. See detail (B7).
