Description

Plan Form - RECTANGULAR
WATERFILLED MOAT ON MAP, 1820 (B1).
OS 6IN MAP & APS (1961) SHOW RECTANGULAR ENCLOSURE (C40X30M); APPEARED TO HAVE WIDE OUTER DITCH. AP'S & SITE INVESTIGATION SHOWED THAT BY 1974 THE FEATURES HAD BEEN BADLY DAMAGED (B3).
VERY INDISTINCT, BUT STILL TRACEABLE; EXTENSIVELY PLOUGHED/BULLDOZED (B2).

SP 65431069 Ploughed out moat site found adjacent to Meads Farm in April 1974. It shows on APs (not located) and is traceable on the ground; an extensive scatter of post medieval pottery being evident. Shown as a waterfilled moat on the Oakley enclosure map circa 1820 (B4-B5).

The tenant farmer of Meads Farm indicated the site of the moated feature at SP 65401069. The OS 6" (b7) and APs of 1961 (2) show a rectangular enclosure (approximately 40.0m by 30.0m) which appears to have a wide outer ditch (2). OS APs dated 1974 (b8) reveal that the features have been effaced; the area was under standing crop at the time of investigation. (B6)
