Description

TRACK MAY REPRESENT FORMER COURSE OF PRESENT ROAD WHICH LIES TO N & COULD BE AN ENCLOSURE ROAD (B4).

A probable medieval and/or [post medieval trackway is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in fields between Blackgrove Farm and Middle Blackgrove Farm and centred at SP 77077 18804, two parallel sinuous ditches spaced about 34-35 metres apart extends about 615 metres WNW-ESE, with the latter end terminating at the dwelling formerly known as Upper Blackgrove. About two thirds from the ESE end, the trackway appears to divide and extends W for a further 425 metres around a block of ridge and furrow cultivation, though spaced between 16 and 20 metres apart. To the S of these features is evidence of a second linear trackway that appears on the 1813 Ordnance Surveyors Drawing (OSD 231 No 11 Winlsow). This is a very broad 54 metres wide linear trackway that extends from Blackgrove Farm House to Middle Blackgrove Farm. The N side of the current Berryfields Road appears to be the N side of the earlier road, with the S boundary of the former trackway being a linear but slightly sinuous ditch up to 3.3 metres wide that runs parallel in fields to the S of the modern road for 684 metres. The width between these trackway ditches might suggest drove tracks for moving cattle. On aerial photographs taken in 2010 and 2020 and recent remote sensing data, most of the ditch sections remain extant (5-8).
