Description

WITHOUT PREJUDICE AS TO WHICH MANOR MAY BE REPRESENTED, FIELDWORK LOCATED A SLIGHT SUNKEN TRACK WITH TRACES OF HOUSE PLATFORMS ON N SIDE NR BLACKGROVE FARM AT SP7672 1876 (B4).

An alignment of medieval and/or post medieval platforms is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in fields E of Blackgrove Farm House and centred at SP 76828 18862, a curving alignment of about 12 variously sized and shaped earthwork platforms extends WNW-ESE for about 368 metres. The subrectangular platforms range in size from 11 x 6.5 metres to 35 x 27 metres, with additional platforms being roughly triangular, rhomboid and irregularly shaped. Bounding the alignment on the S side is a boundary ditch defining a broad trackway and to the N of the alignment are blocks of ridge and furrow cultivation. On aerial photographs taken in 2020 and recent remote sensing data, the earthworks remain visible (5-7).
