Historical research carried out as part of the Whittlewood Project suggests the earthworks were the site of the manor of Heybarne, documented in 1369 and possibly originating as an area of assart created by Simon de Patishulle before 1250, held as a sub-manor of Lillingstone Dayrell. Test pitting carried out in July and August 2003 confirmed that the surviving earthworks represented medieval structural remains (internal limestone floors and external cobbled surfaces) with pottery dating from about 1250 to 1400. See report for detail (B4).
Earthwork survey published. Manorial farmstead at Heybarne compared to similar sites at Monksbarn and Dagnall (B5).

A moated site of medieval date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and levelled earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located approximately 300m east of Home Farm, Lillingstone Lovell, and centred at SP 71714 42229. The subrectangular/trapezoidal moat measuring 89x117m at its largest are visible as clear earthworks in 1947 with water channels and internal earthworks visible on later and oblique images. Modern land use is pasture for horses and field boundaries have been moved across the earthwork. Some of the earthworks appear to have been infilled and a large pit has been dug on the south side after June 2005. Earthworks are visible on lidar visualisations. Fieldwork in 2003 as part of the Whittlewood Project identified this as the site of the manor of Heybarne. (8-20)
