Summary

Two Lower Palaeolithic handaxes, a retouched flake and a Levallois flake were found by Treacher at Dean's Pit. The objects were found in an area of Solifluxion gravel above Winter Hill Gravel.

Site noted in English Rivers Survey, mainly wooded area, no visible pit (B3-4)


SU 850890 (approx) Palaeothic implements from Dean's Pit, Marlow, comprise 1 handaxe, 1 retouched flake and 1 Levallois flake. They are in Oxford University Museum (B5).

Dean's Pit lies at SU 849879; 2 handaxes were found there (B2).

Ground inspection and local information confirms there has been no commercial gravel extraction in the vicinity of SU 849 879. Most of the former gravel working in the Marlow area was in area SU 865 867. 'Dean's Pit' is not known locally (B6).
