Description

A MULTIPERIOD SITE. CONSISTING OF ROMAN OCCUPATION(01:000)AND MEDIEVAL BUILDING(02:000)(BIBL 1)WRIGHT'S MILL IS TO EAST OF PRIVATE HOUSES FRONTING EAST SIDE OF CHURCH STREET.

SP 957014. Three levels of Medieval occupation have been found by G Jones (Department of the Environment) at Wright's Mill. Two stone-packed post-holes were sealed beneath an area of closely packed flints 15 x 10 ft, the sole surviving edge suggesting a NW-SE alignment of three post-holes in line; two cut through the flints and one lay beyond them. Pottery associated with the flints is provisionally dated 13/14th century (B9).
The site of the excavation was indicated on OS 6" at SP 95680135 by Mr A Stratford. An excavation report is pending (B10).
(SP 9575 0145) Despite earlier finds of Romano-British pottery here, the ceramics recovered did not indicate any occupation of the site before the 13th century. Three phases of occupation were suggested. Phase A was represented by a postholes, perhaps of a light, ephemeral structure. Phase B was a flint spread of uncertain use, perhaps the base of a building. These phases were probably of the 13th-14th century. Phase C was firmly dated to the 19th century and is represented by postholes, presumably from the fence of the tannery which stood here at that date (B3 and B5).
