Description

ROMAN COIN; DATE UNKNOWN FOUND AT REAR OF MR CLIMPSON'S SHOP BY MR CLIMPSON 'MANY YEARS AGO' (B1). PRESENT LOCATION UNKNOWN. NGR TO REAR OF SHOP.


A dozen Romano-British body sherds were found by A Stratford at SP 958018 during excavations in Blucher Street to extract a petrol tank. The sherds were found at a depth of 3-4 feet. A letter from Climpson reports the finding of a Roman coin at the rear of his shop at SP 9595018 many years ago. The date of the coin is unknown and the sherds were not distinctive enough to be dated (B2).
According to A Stratford the Romano-British sherds were found at SP 95850181, and the Roman coin at SP 9590180. (findspots indicated on OS 6" only) (B1).
