Description

PRESENT HOUSE DESCRIBED AS BEING ON SITE LITTLE NW OF OLD HOUSE (B1).
LOCATION OF ORIGINAL HOUSE ESTIMATED FROM 1649 MAP & FURTHER RESEARCH (B3).
Two maps dating to between 1564 and 1586 show different positions for the manor house. The most detailed shows two villages, Wotton Underwood and Ludgershall. The map is orientated with west to the top so that the windmill on the right hand side between the two villages corresponds with the mill-mound on Windmill Hill. All Saints is shown in the bottom left-hand corner with the manor house above and slightly to the left i.e. to the west and slightly south of the church, sugegsting a location outside the gardens south of the South pavilion of the current Wotton House. But it is not possible to read this map literally as early maps were not accurately surveyed. The other map has south to the top and 'Moat Farm' or the manor house is drawn below the church and to the left, i.e. to the north-west of the church, which is more in the area of Wotton House gardens. The 1649 map shows 'Grenville's gardens barne and house' north-west of the church in the same area and clearly representing the manor house (B4).
