- CEMETERY? (Roman - 43 AD to 409 AD)
Description
Fragmentary human bones including two or three scraps of skull and a large portion of a small Romano-British flask (02:000) POTTERY (03:000) ALSO FOUND NEARBY. The flask cannot be dated precisely from its surviving portion and as both flask and bones were discovered on the spoil heap cannot be absolutely certain that they were originally associated. It seems likely, however, that they represent a Romano-British burial. PERHAPS A SMALL CEMETERY ATTACHED TO SETTLEMENT SITE. SITE IS OPPOSITE WEIRHOUSE MILL at SP 974005 (B1-2).
According to D Humphreys (b6) the remains were found scattered in transported spoil, and their precise findspot within the housing estate centred SP 974003 is not known (B5).
