Description

6 OR MORE GOOD HOUSE PLATFORMS/CROFTS & SUNKEN STREETS BETWEEN, IN VALLEY. FOUND BY MISS M MOUNTAIN, WINGRAVE (B1-2).
PERAMBULATION REVEALED ONLY DISUSED QUARRYING IN AREA; NO SHRINKAGE NOR HOUSE SITES VISIBLE. INSPECTION OF AIR PHOTOS NEGATIVE (B3).

Medieval and/or post-medieval village shrinkage is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in Nup End, in closes between Castle Street and Nup End Lane and centred at SP 86507 19054, interconnected ditches form a number of rectilinear shaped enclosures, enclosing rectilinear platforms and four blocks of ridge and furrow, bounding and overlying which are linear field boundaries. On aerial photographs taken in 2023 and recent remote sensing data, the earthworks remain visible (4-10).
