Description
Dimensions - Length 230m, Length 115m, Width 180m.
Plan Form - TRAPEZOIDAL
DITCH AND BANK, C120CM HIGH, ENCLOSING AREA OF OLD SETTLEMENT, PROB DURING C13 AND C14 WHEN THE LEE WAS GRANTED TO MISSENDEN ABBEY. AREA INCLUDES OLD CHURCH (CASS 02238), NEW CHURCH (CASS 02239), CHURCH FARM (01:000) AND EARTHWORKS: HOLLOW WAY (02:00 0) AND ?HOUSE PLATFORMS (03:000) (B1-10).
Village site, covers a pear-shaped area of 7 1/2 acres; both the old and new churches and Curch Farm are within the enclosure (centred SP 897044). The defences now consist of a rampart, strengthened in some places by a ditch. On the SW the rampart is 4ft above the ditch. The north part of the work is partly obliterated by the main road, and the positions of the original entrances are not apparent (B2).
A village enclosure comprising a bank and outer ditch, best-preserved on the west side where the bank is 0.5m high, but elsewhere destroyed or mutilated by modern hedges along its line. Within the enclosed area at SP 897044 are the amorphous remains of internal enclosures and a sunken trackway. Published survey (25") revised. (B14).
