Description

In the early Roman period an extensive field system of ditched field or paddock boundaries was laid out on a different alignment to the earlier Bronze Age fields. A 350m long NE-SW field boundary extended across both excavation areas, with an external trackway running along its NW side for 150m before curving to the NW. Perpendicular ditched boundaries run off the axial NE-SW boundary, with subdivisions forming up to 11 fields or paddocks 30m wide and 50-60m long, aligned NW-SE. A small rectangular structure 2mX4m, and another 10mX12m, within two of the fields/paddocks are interpreted as livestock pens. 4 pits are also dated to this period. See report for detail (B2).
