Description

The site of the former home of Wycombe Wanderers Football Club. The club was formed in 1884 probably by workers of the town's chair factories. In 1887 they formerly adopted the name of Wycombe Wanderers and were offered the use of Loakes Park ground rent-free for a year. This then became a 14 year lease which was later extended. The club temporarily vacated the ground between 1889 and 1901 when the pitch was levelled. In 1903-4 a stand was built with a thatched roof, followed by a new main stand in 1923. The terracing was covered in 1932. The ground remained largely undeveloped despite a modicum of success in the league. From the 1970s an alternative site was pursued and the club eventually decided on a site in Sands, which became Adams Park [CAS 1590900000]. The Loakes Park ground was closed in 1990 and the land used to accommodate an extension to the adjacent hospital and new flats (B1).
