Description
A Fort is listed on Jolivet's 1752 map although its position has been lost to damage and deterioration. Hannan's paintings of broadly similar date from the Cascade ('Lake and Hill') and from the Broadwalk ('Lake and Park') show a small box-like fort with a crenellated parapet at the north-eastern corner of the southern island (near the present boathouse). It does not appear on Richardson's map of 1767. A surviving earthwork bank provides good corroborative evidence for the presence of the Fort shown here by Jolivet. An early eighteenth century cannon mounted on a carriage now stands in this location, and is one of a pair (the other standing by the Cascade). These cannons are thought to have come from a crewed sixty-ton frigate that sailed on the lake in the 18th century. Another contemporary small wooden mock fort was erected by Sir Francis Dashwood on an island in the River Wye further east, known as the Citadel (B13).
