Description

Earthwork survey of the West Wycombe Estate by English Heritage between April 2000 and June 2001 identified several sections of a pre-park road between West Wycombe village and Toweridge, surviving as earthworks south of the mansion, east of Druids Hut and south of the Round House. The road is shown on a map of 1698-1710.
In the woodland to the south of the mansion the route survives as a deep and wide hollow way which bifurcates to the east and west and flanks Toweridge Common. The western arm, which has been interrupted by the establishment of a woodland ride aligned directly on the southern façade of the house, leads south-west for 200m but the eastern arm extends along the ridge top and ultimately connects with the main Wycombe road north of Park Farm. Traces of the eastern route survive in the ploughed field to the east of Druid's Hut and have truncated parts of the earlier 'Celtic' field system. The road in this area consists of a shallow hollow way 12m wide and 0.2m deep defined on either side by low banks. South of the Round House, the route survives as a raised trackway in a N-S belt of woodland, with a cambered surface 14m wide and 0.2m high (1-3).
The earthworks are visible in Chilterns Conservation Board LiDAR dataset.
