Description

An enclosure plus associated pits visible as cropmarks on air photographs taken July 2 2001. The enclosure measures circa 16 metres by 15 metres, with a straightish southern side, and eastern and western sides that start stright before curving round to form the northern side, giving a D-shaped appearance. A single entrance/causeway exists towards the western end of the northern side. Within the enclosure are at least 7 large pits, up to 2.5 metres across, and occupying a substantial proportion of the interior. The southern side of the enclosure is approached from the east by a line of at least 4 similarly-sized pits, and further pits either overlie or are cut but the enclosure's southern ditch. An extension of the southern ditch appears to head northwest, and may also cut/overlie further pits. A few isolated pits, one 40 metres northeast of the enclosure, are also evident. Soil and geological conditions make it difficult to distinguish genuinely archaeological features, but 70 metres due east of the enclosrue is a curving length of probable ditch, which may represent about half of a circuit circa 16 metres in diameter. Other linear features appear to relate to field boundaries extant on Ordnance Survey 1st edition map (1).
