Description

A small parish cemetery laid out 1899-1900 apparently by London architect and surveyor Robert Haden Tebb, costing £554 (exl. architect’s fees), surviving in good condition, largely complete. Overall significance in the chapel, varied mature planting and notable memorials.
Architectural significance in the small, central chapel believed to be by Robert Haden Tebb (1861-1945), surveyor and developer who laid out the nearby private Abbotsbrook Estate beside the Thames, 1898-1907. London architect Alexander Kersey FRIBA (d.1938) sketched a rough plan of the cemetery on the reverse of a piece of his headed notepaper (PR-141/3/6) in relation to a proposed mausoleum in the SE corner.
Artistic significance in the Picturesque design and planting of the cemetery and its relationship with the chapel, reflected in the numerous and varied surviving mature trees and bulbs, and the design of the chapel. Some trees and shrubberies on low earth mounds. Ornamental memorials, including Bloxam headstone (1927), artist & goldsmith ACE Carr (1940) and angel on vaults in the SE corner for de Satje family (c.1946). Historic interest: grave of author Edgar Wallace (1932).
A charming small, late Victorian cemetery with a Picturesque character, a well-detailed chapel and mid-C20 memorial/vault in the SE corner of the site. See report for detail and photos (B1).
