Description

(SP 862072) Camp (GT) (B1).
"Lipscombe, quoted in Sheahan (B5): 'On its northern slope (ie of Bacombe Hill) may be traced a vallum and bank running nearly parallel with and only a little distance from the Icknield Way'. See also air photo 6604 (print and negative destroyed)" (B2).
Visited 19 5 56. The area indicated is all cut about by old chalk pits and there are no features, apart from the tumulus (SP 80 NE 4) which cannot be explained in the light of them. The site is on the toe of Bacombe Hill and most unlikely to be chosen for a camp. 150 yds N of the tumulus there is a series of three banks running across the track. These too may have resulted from chalk digging, but they may also be the mutilated remains of cross dykes cutting the Icknield Way, which in its older form is likely to have run up the hill here. But in view of their direction they can hardly be the works referred to by Lipscomb (B3).
There is no evidence for a 'Camp' on Bacombe Hill and an intensive search of the area failed to reveal any trace of a cross-ridge dyke. Apart from the deep hollow way, the alleged Upper Icknield Way, there are several sunken tracks running down the end of the ridge (B4).
