Description

Amersham Magistrates’ Court was built in the 1960s in King George V Road, Amersham, Chiltern, Buckinghamshire by an unknown architect. The court is located on a complex containing a separate police station and council offices. The building is a purpose built court and consists of a single storey with raised glass over the courtrooms which provide light. The interior facilities of the building consist of a waiting room, probation room, advocates’ room and there is also a link to the council offices. The floor area of the building covers 705.91sq/ft.
According to a list supplied to English Heritage’s Government Historic Estates Unit in 2012, the building was being considered for disposal (1).
This record includes National Record of the Historic Environment Information provided by Historic England on 4 June 2025 licensed under the Open Government Licence (2).

Standing quietly to the E [of Chiltern District Council Offices] the excellent Law Courts of 1968, by the County Architect's Department. Dignified but approachable. One-storey, slightly raised on a brick plinth. Oolitic limestone and glass cladding. The plan, with clerestory-lit courtrooms behind a glass-walled foyer, has been repeated since by the County Architect (cf eg Milton Keynes). A glazed corridor links this part to offices which enclose a small garden. This S end is connected to the cells of the police station (3).
